Spring 2023 Morel forays will focus on the Forest Hill area where the Mosquito fire occurred last Fall.  We will be looking for "burn morels" in the national forest area, far away from any towns or buildings that were destroyed by this fire covering 80,000 acres (no injuries or fatalities reported for this fire, thank goodness!).  Best place to stay overnight is Auburn or northern Sacramento, and we'll probably start the foray in Forest Hill at 10am.

I will be scouting the area ahead of time, and until then we won't know for sure where we are going.  So I'll send emails about a week ahead of each foray with details of where we're going.

At the end of the season, mid June probably, we'll probably go to the Pollock Pines area and Mormon Emigrant Trail (MET).  Morels often like the disturbed areas caused by the logging near the roads after the 2021 fires there.  So the MET area is likely to be very productive for the next year or two.

I'm cancelling some forays due to predicted heavy rains, if any days are greater than half-inch of rain.  The trails are slippery, so please wear appropriate shoes/boots.
    Please be Safe!
After these rains, we should start seeing hedgehogs and black trumpets, hopefully in really great numbers!!  Yay for rain!  Just have to wait for good days to go out mushroom hunting.

The first big rain is falling as I write this, and that means Porcini (and possibly Chicken of the Woods) should be making an appearance during the next few weeks.  Coastal areas with more consistent moisture will very likely see a flush of Boletus edulis during October.  So, we've scheduled several forays to take folks out and show them where and how to find these amazing fungi!

Looks like a great morel season will continue for at least two more weeks!  Therefore, we're adding two more morel forays on Sat June 4th and Sat June 11th.   We need at least 10 people to sign up for each date.   So far, everyone has found morels on every foray so far.  And I think the morels will still be popping up for the next few weeks, especially if we get some rain!

Added hotel info and lots of other things to the May Morels page.  A few folks had asked (Hi Lauren - that's you!).  Also wanted to clarify that permits are not needed in the El Dorado forest for mushroom hunting for "incidental use" (meaning, for your own use, and not for sale).
